TVONE Movie Premiere “Don’t Waste Your Pretty”: A Positive Representation of Black Love, Black Friendship, and Black Success

There is very little representation of Black positivity on television when it comes to movies, shows, and reality television. This is what makes the movie, “Don’t Waste Your Pretty,” on TV One a must-see.

Based on the eponymous book penned by award-winning author and media personality Demetria L. Lucas; the movie follows a group of closely knit friends as they sort out their unsettled life issues and love lives, while turning to one another to figure out their next move when jobs, romance, or family interactions prove more complicated than they had ever anticipated.

The cast of DON’T WASTE YOUR PRETTY includes Keri Hilson (“Think Like A Man” and “Almost Christmas”), Redaric Williams (“The Yard” and “The Young And The Restless”), Deborah Joy Winans (“Greenleaf”), Jasmine Burke (“Saints & Sinners”), Kaye Singleton (“American Soul”) and Rainey Branch (“Being Mary Jane” and “Grey’s Anatomy”).

A true depiction of Black love, Black friendship, and Black success, the characters each have their own way of seeing things yet are open to the constructive criticism that aids in their emotional, mental, and physical growth. The tough conversations between friends are what make this movie a special gift for all to watch. We can all relate to one (or more) of the characters, and at the same time, yearns to have a better circle of friends, be a better companion, and be better to ourselves. It is truly one of the most positive representations of successful, thriving black excellence.

Black women are often socially defined as having to be “strong” no matter what life throws at us. In “Don’t Waste Your Pretty”, Jeanné, played by Deborah Joy Winans (Greenleaf), struggled with her past & was in denial about her mental health after her very toxic divorce. During a press conference, I asked both Deborah Joy Winans and Redaric Williams what did they hope ppl will learn from the characters after watching and here is what each had to say:

And trust me, you will take away that and so much more! Again, it is a must-see and feel good movie.

DON’T WASTE YOUR PRETTY premieres on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at 8 p.m./7C on TVONE.
