Thought Leader in Brand and Business Management, Kendra Hill Has Taken The Consulting World By Storm

The 33-year-old CEO of Kendra, Scale My Business – a consulting firm based in Atlanta that specializes in supporting creators and multimillion-dollar businesses in continuing to grow in revenue, people reached, and brand visibility – has reinvented the management consultant model. As a result of this, her presence has grown across the globe as clients from around the world reach out to utilize her services.  Notable clients include Marriott International, JustFab, The UNCF, Trojan, and Revel Casino Hotel.

As a thought leader in brand and business management, Kendra has taken the consulting world by storm, and many people are asking the same question. “How?”.  Kendra has easy, affordable, and extremely applicable ways of showing novice entrepreneurs to CEOs of Fortune 500 companies just how to increase their profits in a small amount of time.

We know there are plenty of consultants out there, but what sets Kendra apart is her non-traditional approach to everything she does. With almost a decade of entrepreneurial experience, she has learned that the key to generating revenue is treating each client’s business as her own in an incredibly unique way.  Hustle and Soul Magazine got an exclusive interview with Kendra.

Tammy Reese: What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

Kendra Hill: At my core, I have always wanted to improve the lives of those around me. I was actually preparing to run for city council in my hometown when I heard God loud and clear. My campaign slogan, “I Am San Antonio” was actually supposed to be the name of my first business. Instead of filing to run for office, I filed my LLC and launched my business. We primarily did brand management for small businesses and churches ultimately helping leaders get visible online.

Tammy Reese: How do you use your platform to inspire others?

Kendra Hill: I spend a lot of time sharing everything I can with those who follow me on and offline. Along with sharing very dense freebies, I also focus on teaching entrepreneurs how to regulate their minds to achieve their goals. Mindset is a HUGE factor when it comes to success. Helping business owners shift their thinking is a big part of my inspirational impact.

Tammy Reese: How did your advocacy for diversity training in the workplace come about?

Kendra Hill: My first adult job was as a staff assistant to a Member of Congress at 19 years old. My entire office was white and so were the majority of people on Capitol Hill. After that, I worked at UNCF where most of the staff was Black. Next up was Google – you already know how that was set up 10 years ago. Once I started my own business and had to hire my own staff, I started trying to get to the core of what makes a good team member.

Aside from the basics like good work ethic, integrity, etc., I quickly learned that empathy is a leading characteristic of solid people. Empathy is directly related to experience and minorities have usually experienced an array of challenges in life. Beyond the need for visibility and people seeing folks who look like them, we have a need to express empathy to others which can at times be challenging for white counterparts.

Since becoming an advocate for diversity, I have worked hard to increase morale and empathy for my client’s businesses by not only hiring diverse candidates but also hiring true global citizens.

Tammy Reese: What are some memorable moments in your career so far?

Kendra Hill: Whew! There are so many, to be honest. Most recently I would say that making nearly $2M in the first year of Kendra, Scale My Business is one of the most memorable moments. Never in a million years did I expect to have such immediate success, but it was really a culmination of a decade of experrience.

In contrast, a very important moment in my career came in 2014 when I moved to California. It was the hardest 9 months of my life –  a true valley experience – but my time there and the experiences I had truly aligned me with God in a way I had never experienced before. That moment in my life shaped and molded me into the woman I am now and enabled me to walk into my purpose drive enterprise.

Tammy Reese: What are some branding and business management tips you would have for our readers?

Kendra Hill: There are plenty of tips and tricks I’d love to share with the readers, but here are a few foundational tips. Firstly, stay authentic! You want your customers to build a connection with your brand. The best way to do that is by showing them the human side of your business. Be relatable. People buy from people! Secondly, get up and try again! No matter how many tough days you have, or how many people doubt your business, trust your path! If you know it’s your purpose, KEEP PUSHING!

Lastly, stay consistent! Stay consistent in your branding so that your products and content are always recognizable to consumers. But also stay consistent in your work ethic, in your commitment to your business, and with yourself! Consistency is the best way to build trust, good habits, and good systems.

Tammy Reese: What type of feedback have you received from your clients that you consult?

Kendra Hill: I’m really blessed. My clients usually willingly write testimonials for me without requesting. While there are many encouraging words, there is a common thread: I care. More than just caring that their businesses succeed, I care about them as people. Most recently, I taught a sales class to entrepreneurs, and everyone mentioned how I gave them the confidence needed to run their businesses.

Clients call me “hardworking”, “empowering”, “transparent” and “compassionate.” But honestly, my favorite piece of feedback came from famous science communicators AsapSCIENCE: “We think she may be one of the smartest people we’ve ever met.” You know it’s real when scientists say it!

Tammy Reese: What do you want your legacy to be?

The deeper truth will be that I fulfilled my purpose – to motivate and inspire others to align themselves with God’s plan for their lives.
