Over the last decade, singer/songwriter, Ballad’s surly voice, passionate lyrics, and alluring aura has helped him build a social media community of nearly 150,000 followers. He’s also earned over 6,5000 monthly Spotify listeners. His single “Orange” went viral on (Black) Twitter in the midst of the “R&B Is Dead” conversation with over 1.5M views, and is a sound that is gaining popularity on TikTok.

Hustle and Soul Magazine obtained an exclusive interview with Ballad.
Please tell us about yourself and what got you into the music business.
Ballad: I’m a singer/songwriter. I was originally born in Angola. I’ve always loved music and I’ve always wanted to bring a little more love into the world. Growing up and listening to some of my favorite artists really had an impact on me. Being able to resonate with them and feel them in the music, felt like a gift. I want to give that same gift to others. That’s what got me to start my journey in the music business.
Describe your process of making a song.
Ballad: It’s very stream of consciousness. I’ll listen to a beat and allow space for whatever wants to come out. I let it come out as it wants, and then I decipher it. I polish it up until I feel satisfied with the music and the message.
What are some of your most meaningful songs and why?
Ballad: I would have to say “Orange” and “Wondering”. I was able to allow myself to be very vulnerable on those records. They both honor parts of myself that needed a voice. I feel proud of myself for allowing the space to do that.
What are some of your latest projects and what are you working on now?
Ballad: I just released my newest single “Lemonade”. It’s a playful song that I hope people can enjoy and really move to. I’m also working on an EP and an album.
What does music mean to you and what do you want your musical legacy to look like?
Ballad: Music is spiritual. Music is healing. Music is a gift. A gift that connects us and pours love into us. I want my music to do that across the world. To connect people with love. To make them feel something, do something, and heal something. Not just for a moment, but for a lifetime. I want my music to be timeless.
