What was the journey like for you from the Nursing field to becoming a CEO?
Dr. Donna: My journey from the bedside to CEO is very challenging, yet so rewarding. I say challenging because this change required an entire shift in my mindset. Growing up, I was never taught or encouraged to be my own boss. Instead, we are taught to go to school, get a good education, find a decent job, work hard, and if we are lucky, we will retire with a nice pension. This was my driving force all my life, I excelled in school, focused on my education, and was the best in my work. However, when the decision was made to start my own business, I was crippled by fear. The fear of failure and the perception of friends, families, and co-workers if I failed.
Having a mindset change gave me a new perspective and a driving force to which I was no longer comfortable simply working for someone else. With my many years of training, I bring strong clinical skills to the table but now, as a business owner, I must also master and balance the business aspects of being a boss. I had to learn new skills and understand the scope of business management, marketing, legalities, etc.
What do you think our readers should know about skin health during the summer and as we approach the fall season?
Dr. Donna: The number one skin health recommendation is to protect our skin daily by wearing sunscreen, especially during the summer months, when we are more exposed to damaging UV rays. Excessive exposure to the sun can cause skin damage, premature aging, fine lines, and wrinkles and puts us at risk of developing skin cancer. It is therefore essential to apply sunscreen with an SPF 30 or greater during the summer months. Sunscreen should be applied anytime we are in the sun, including during cloudy days or winter months.
Second, it is especially important that we are hydrating our body and skin. Dry skin is the leading cause of aging even at an early age and air conditioners during the summer can leave our skin dry and dehydrated. This can be prevented by drinking plenty of water and moisturizing often. It is recommended that we use a light moisturizer during the summer months and a heavier one in the fall and winter seasons. Protect the lips as well from dehydration and sun damage by wearing a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher.
Finally, humidity during summer can lead to bacterial skin infection due to sweat and clogged pores, resulting in acne breakouts. Therefore, it is essential to have a good skincare routine. Use a face wash suited for your skin type that will cleanse and remove all the impurities that clog our pores. Cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturizing twice per day will help maintain our skin’s healthy glow.
Regardless of the season, eating healthy, exercising, and good skincare routine is essential for healthier bodies and more youthful glowing skin.
How important is it to obtain facials and how often should we get them?
Dr. Donna: Facials are important as they not only help to get rid of dead skin cells but aide in promoting collagen production, rejuvenating the skin by slowing down the aging process, exfoliating dead skin cells, and exposing newer younger looking skin. Professional facials also help to deliver moisture and nutrients to deeper layers of the skin allowing us to have a more youthful glow.
How often we get facials depends on various factors including your skin type, your skincare goals, and the type of facials you will be receiving. It is recommended that we get a professional facial at least once every 4–6 weeks as our bodies shed old skin cells and new cells are generated and rise to the surface. Facials should be done frequently to maximize the results but not too often to aggravate the skin and cause damage.
Alternatively, the frequency of receiving a facial can also depend on the specific concern that is being treated. A person receiving treatment for acne, age spots, and hyperpigmentation may initially require more frequent facial treatments compared to someone getting maintenance anti-aging facials.
Of course, facials are very relaxing and great to show yourself love by taking time to decompress and be pampered.
We would love to hear about your new podcast. What can you tell us about it?
Dr. Donna: The title of my podcast is Journey with Dr. Donna. I believe life is a journey, and on this journey, we encounter different experiences that affect us and shape our lives.
Therefore, our goal is empowerment, with topics focused on Health, Beauty, and Wellness. Health, because we need to take care of our physical bodies. Beauty, because we all need to start loving and accepting ourselves more by learning to erase feelings of low self-esteem and negative self-talk. Finally, wellness focuses on our emotional and spiritual health, which is essential and aides in enhancing our coping skills.
Working in the hospital setting, I recognize that people are hurting, emotionally (which manifests as anxiety, stress, or depression) and physically (health concerns). I wanted to talk to us women about the issues affecting us daily with the goal of advocating for change. I aim to accomplish this by being an encouraging, and compassionate voice, and providing emotional support for positive change.
As the owner of MedSpa: (Rejuvenére Health & Aesthetics), how do you want your clients to feel after obtaining your services?
Dr. Donna: I want my clients to feel safe; safe in knowing that we hear them and the treatments and services they receive are specifically tailored to meet their skincare, health, and wellness goals. In addition, I want my clients to feel exceptional in knowing they will be treated like a member of my family, and to walk away feeling loved, pampered, and beautiful.
My goal is to make a difference in my client’s life by listening attentively to their concerns and providing effective care and services in a relaxing, friendly, and safe environment.
Any self-care advice you would like to leave our readers with?
Dr. Donna: I recognize that as women and business owners, we are always taking care of others, but neglect to care for ourselves. This leaves us overworked, overstressed, and overweight. I want to empower others to live a healthier life by taking care of their health, to not only look good on the outside, but also be healthy on the inside. This is essential, especially as we get older and start to recognize the changes and signs of aging occurring in our bodies.
Taking the time and allowing yourselves to be pampered, having a spa day, a “me” day is important for your physical as well as your emotional/mental health. When we look good, we feel good!
