Discussing Hysterectomy Awareness Month With Skyn by Chi Owner, Chiquita Zachery

May is Hysterectomy Awareness Month. We were able to interview an Atlanta woman who launched a successful beauty brand and it all started after side effects from a hysterectomy she had to have in her early 30s.

After her hysterectomy, Chiquita Zachery had a fluctuation in hormones that caused severe adult acne.

At the onset of the pandemic, she worked for a major airline that gave employees the option to take a leave of absence without pay since most flights had been grounded. Chiquita decided this was a way she could stay home and take care of her acne and scarring. She created Skyn by Chi after tons of trial and error with other products.

Skyn by Chi was established in 2020 and is a black-owned, woman-owned, Atlanta-based skincare company. Their products focus on achieving healthy glowing skin for women and men of all skin types. Skyn by Chi is cruelty-free, vegan, and formulated with clean ingredients made in the USA. Its mission is to provide consumers with the tools to renew their skin and natural beauty. We talked with Chiquita about her back story and the future of the brand.

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, I’m Chiquita Zachery and I am 39 years old. I am a wife and mother of 3 plus 2 bonus kids. For the past 18 years, I’ve been employed at the amazing Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, Ga. I was born and raised in New Orleans (Magnolia Project). I moved to Atlanta when I was 19 years old. My childhood was very challenging growing up in the projects. There was a lot of violence and I have seen a lot as a child. But as a little girl, I knew life was bigger than New Orleans and I was determined to control my own destiny.

Who do you feel is your target audience?

My target audience is 20- 45-year-old women and men with dark spots, and skin concerns, and looking for affordable luxury products. My target market shops at small boutiques, Target, and love convenient places like Amazon, DoorDash, and Uber. My target audience loves brunches with the girls, watching sports, happy hour with coworkers, and Friday nights in with their man or woman. My target audience has their bachelor’s, has a monthly car payment, goes to spas/salons/barber shops regularly and loves to travel across the globe.

What do you define as success?

So everyone’s definition of success is different. It can be defined in many different ways. It’s really not a right or wrong thing. My definition of success is when you simply try your best in all aspects of everything you do. For me, success is something as small as having “peace of mind”, happiness, and being present for my husband and kids.

What was the inspiration behind your brand?

I was inspired to create Skyn by Chi after experiencing a hormonal imbalance that caused my face to breakout and resulting in emotional distress and scarred skin. I tried everything that you can imagine to get rid of my adult acne, facial hyperpigmentation (dark spots), and dryness. After countless hours researching effective ingredients that addressed my adult acne, hyperpigmentation, uneven texture and dehydration, I birth Skyn by Chi. I also tested my skincare products on myself, close friends, and family in which I saw amazing results.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

I differentiate my business from the competition by making sure that my products are actually solving the customer’s skin concerns. Natural, affordable and luxurious is what our products represent. Skyn by Chi is also cruelty-free, vegan, and formulated with clean ingredients made in the USA. Another thing that differentiates my business from the competition is that not only do I sell skincare, but I’m also a skin specialist (Esthetician). That’s a big deal when customers are discussing their skin concerns. They want to be able to trust that you’re helping them make the right choice when choosing a skincare product.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

The most effective marketing strategy I’ve used to grow my business has been social media, email marketing and word of mouth.

What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs in the beauty space?

A piece of advice I would tell an aspiring and new entrepreneur in the beauty space is to stay committed. Being an entrepreneur is not easy and it’s definitely not for the weak. Learn as much as you possibly can about your business and the industry. For the beauty space specifically, stay on top of what’s trending. People are taking better care of their skin these days and they want the newest products that are trending.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

My plan for the next six months is to be more visible with my brand. I’ve been so busy trying to finish school over the past few months, which was super rough, but I got through it. I had to somewhat put my business on the back burner temporarily. I don’t have staff yet that can run the business if I can’t be there 100% of the time or step in to assist. I would also like to start hiring for the business within the next six months. More to come on that!

We love Chiquita’s hustle and hope you stay connected with her online @skynbychi
