Black Owned Cleaning Brand Promoting Non-Toxic Products

There are very few Black-owned cleaning brands and even fewer Black owned brands that promote nontoxic ingredients. The Pearsons started Derx in 2020, but Mrs. Pearson has had experience cleaning homes for over 30 years. A lot of her ideas for the product came from generational cleaning techniques passed down from her family. But last year there were very few products without harsh ingredients on local shelves. So, they began to create their own product for their kids as well. They thought of all the harmful irritants that our children are subjected to and wanted to change that.

Derx is a brand that is family-friendly that all communities can use because they consider you like family. Derx’s limited ingredients use a holistic approach with essential oils that makes everyday cleaning safe for adults and children. Derx promotes simple ingredients that are not harmful to our youth. We had the opportunity to interview Nukeyia Pearson, the co-founder and mom behind the brand.

What books do you recommend for every entrepreneur to read?

I recommend books that hone in on your skills and abilities, that you already have because that would be your bread and butter. We recommend any of Dr. Claude Anderson’s books.

What motivates you to keep going?

The customers and the positive feedback. It gives me affirmation that I’m doing God’s work and the right thing. I would say family, because we are planting a seed of legacy. Something they can take and pass on.

What does your typical workday look like?

The first thing I do is go in prayer, have my breakfast and print out the work orders. As a team, we discuss what needs to be shipped for the orders that need to be made. The product is hand-made, and typically shipped the same day. Our team works on budgeting, inventory, and marketing. We also work sales forecasts for the next quarter.

How do you manage your work-life balance?

Business is during business hours; 8am to 5pm. The rest of the time is dedicated to family and myself. My husband works full time and goes for walks every day to maintain health and eats a healthy diet. For leisure, we enjoy going out on the weekends and having special date nights.

When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I wanted to become an entrepreneur in my twenties. I always wanted to be in control of my destiny. The confidence you get is immeasurable; the ability to be able to hire people and help.

What do you enjoy most about entrepreneurship? What do you find the hardest about it?

Some days it is steak and eggs, some days it is ramen noodles. You are totally responsible for your success. If you win it’s on you, if you lose it’s on you. There is no limit. How much will you invest in yourself will determine your destination.

How did you come up with the name of your company?

I took my husband’s and my son’s names and combined them to create Derx. Derek and Dex.

Where do you see Derx in 5 years?

We want to be a major warehouse in the midwest for Black-owned cleaning supplies.

What problem does your product solve?

We have a product that cleans very well and you do not need to be afraid that these wipes will harm your children when cleaning the house. Most of the cleaning products on the market today have toxic and corrosive chemicals that leave dangerous residues on surfaces. They can be used on any surface; the car dash, cell phones, toys, granite, marble, etc.
